Best fish for 10 gallon tank

Stocking a 10 gallon aquarium can actually be quite difficult – you’ve got an awkward amount of space to fill, and you need to make sure that you’re choosing fish that will live well together. It’s not a huge amount of space either, so you’ll need to think about the size of the fish you’ll be putting in the tank, and how much room the fish will have in the tank to ensure that they’re healthy and happy.

With this guide, we want to help you figure out how you should stock your 10 gallon aquarium – we’ll be giving you advice on how many fish you should have, what types of fish and what fish are best for a tank of this size.

So let’s start with the most difficult question….

How many fish can you keep in a 10 gallon aquarium?

There is no straightforward answer here – it really depends on the type of fish you want to have, and what size they are. Our recommendation is to plan this very carefully. Don’t just think about what size your fish are now, think about what size they’ll be once they’re fully grown, and measure your 10 gallon tank carefully to ensure that your fish will still be able to live in it comfortably once they’re at their full size.

You should also think about how dirty the tank will be if you have more fish in it. So although you might be able to fit around 20 small fish in a 10 gallon aquarium, that will mean a lot of work in keeping the tank clean and it will also mean you won’t have as much room for fun things like plants and aquariums!

What are the best fish for a 10 gallon tank?

Ideally you’d want to choose smaller fish for a 10 gal – the main reason for this is that it’s not a huge amount of space in a tank like this, so the smaller the fish you choose, the more you can put into your tank. There are some obvious fish that you might want to include in the tank – a Betta fish, Tetras or Guppies are all ideal choices. However if you want some more interesting types of fish in your tank, you could easily add in some Corydoras, Sparkling Gourami or Killifish.

Hopefully this guide helps you choose the best fish when you’re stocking a 10 gallon aquarium!
